Negotiation can still occur after a guilty verdict. OJ can give up appeal for a lower deal. The defense can file a motion for new trial, which would require a response from the people. To set up those motions, both sides probably want a complete transcript of the trial. Also, what other posters have said regarding probation reports is true.

Before anyone is sentenced, the probation department prepares a report for the judge with sentencing recommendations.
It will take a while for the department to get to OJ, as there are other criminals in line before him.

the probation department needs to prepare a memo on what the sentence should be, this takes time
also, it gives OJ's attorneys a chance to bargain for a sentencing recommendation from the prosecutors office

Because everyone has the right to prepare a case as to why they deserve a lighter sentence. They need to find people to testify as a character witness, to find cases in point as to why they deserve lighter sentences, etc.

I guess the court calendar is full in Vegas! Who cares as long as he's in custody.
