Is the boy band ARASHI really popular in Japan?

ARASHI is not a "band", they are an idol group .

They are one of the most popular male idol group in Japan, just like SMAP if you know them.

ARASHI is actually from same agency with SMAP where hold many other idols.

If you have watched a movie "The Letter from Iwo-Jima" directed by Clint Eastwood, there's one guy from ARASHI starred in the movie. His name is Kazunari Ninomiya. (His role name was Saigo, I think)

"band" reminds of musical group that play some instruments... ARASHI doesn't do that.

Yes. they are quite popular in Jpn. Many teens love them. :)

They are not band, could be called group because they never play music instruments but sing songs and dance only. Idol status in Japan means young(low to high teenager mostly) entertainer, such as singer, dancer and/or actor /actress as tv/movie star.
