Will penicillin decrease effectiveness of the IUD (birth control)?

I read it decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills...but the IUD is not a pill...so is for all types of birth control?

NO! I took penicilllin a few months ago and before taking it contacted my gyno and she said antibiotics and penicillin will NOT affect either the Mirena IUD and the Paragard IUD. Reason being, The Mirena is hormonal yet its localized unlike a birth control pill. The Paragard (which I currently have), is non hormonal and any antibiotics, let alone penicillin, will have no affect on the IUD. Just contact your gyno.

The IUD is just a object that makes the uterus a "hostile" living environment. The embryo cannot implant so there should be no effect.

If the IUD releases hormones, then the antibiotic will interfere with the proper metabolism of the hormones and pregnancy prevention may be impaired. If not, then i'm not so sure.
