BLACK ROBBERS (A True Story)
This would have to be one of the best emails I've ever read....
For anyone who didn't see the episode of David Letterman's show where This story was told, Read this: (And remember it's a true story...)
On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of Quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the Hotel dining room.
But first she wanted to stash the Quarters in her room. I'll be right back and we'll go to eat' she told her husband and carried The coin-laden bucket to the elevator.
As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was very tall and had an intimidating figure.
The woman froze. Her first thought was: 'These two are going to rob me.' Her next thought was: 'Don't be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice Gentlemen.' But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her.
Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. 'My God' she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore.
Then one of the men said, 'Hit the floor.' Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and Collapsed on the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her.
'Take my money and spare me', she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, 'Ma'am, if you'll just tell us
What floor you're going to, we'll push the button.' The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up.
Confused, she struggled to her feet. 'When I told my friend here to hit The floor,' said the average sized one, I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn't mean For you to hit the floor, 'Ma'am.' He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. The woman thought: 'My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself.' She was too humiliated to speak. The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket.
When the elevator arrived at her floor they they insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might Not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening.
As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator.
The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband.
The next morning flowers were delivered to her room; a dozen roses.
Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred-dollar bill. The card said: 'Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years.'
It was signed; Eddie Murphy & Michael Jordan.
Things are such now that we have to be careful on ALL FRONTS for as things become more unpredictable some people in general become more desparate. That said we should not live our lives in fear without reason (or because of superficial reasons) but make it our daily practice to be aware of our surroundings regardless to who it is and where. Color doesn't hurt us, people do.

Do you assume that you should fear every Black or White person you meet?
I don't fear anyone, because when I leave the house, I am always carrying concealed. I know that if I have to defend myself, I have the means to do it. However when the majority of violent crimes are overwhelmingly committed by blacks, I think it would be pretty foolish of someone to be open and accepting of all black people they meet on the street. That's just common sense. That being said, I don't trust all white people I meet either. I just know that I have less of a chance of being robbed or killed by someone that is white. Like it or not, statistics show this to be true. The posted story might be true, but it means very little. It's almost like you are trying to use the story as an argument to say that blacks will not rob you, just because they didn't in this instance. Please tell me you are not that naive.

I think the ultimate answer is that christians are sinners just like everyone else. I awknowlge that some christians have an attitude that needs some serious adjustment but in reality we're no better or worse than anyone else. These "crucifixes" are just showing our gratitude to God that he sacrificed his son to save us. And not just Christians either he died for you me and "snoop dog and porn stars" Christianity isn't aboutwalking around with fear and a chip on your shoulder, its about having faith that the Lord controls our life and its not up to us. And I know you say that the whole snoop dog thing is stereotypical but so is your view of christianity. I challenge you to research it a little more and you will see that it's about a lot more that throwing hate/pity parties on unbelievers. I for one definently care about this world. I don't think it sucks or anything like that. This world is a gift from god because he loves us so much. He isn't a dooming hateful god making everything hopeless bitter and crazy. He loves us all very very much. And he loves you to. Try reading the Case for Faith a great book about why we need faith.

that just rubs me the wrong way. why would you walk into an elevator, and two men are already in there, and you would assume they were going to rob you? it makes no sense. it's not like they were following her around. and then they give her $1200 dollars for racial profiling? i would be pissed, not laughing.

It is a fact that black people are more likely to commit an assault than white people, men are more likely to commit an assault than women, and young people more likely to commit an assault than old people.
Therefore, it makes sense to be more wary of a young black man than an old white woman!
It's not racist, sexist, or ageist. It's common sense.
Having said that, it's also true that most people, whatever their race, sex, or age, are perfectly law-abiding. This is a statistical point only.

Do you know there are actually few people who would react this way. Although with the current situation, it could become more common.
