I am trying to sew with a singer 401a and do not know how to make it sew in reverse.?

    The stitch length knob on the right. Lift it up to the top. It will go reverse.

    I am a sewing machine tech and collector. I have a couple of these and really, the 401's were probably the best sewing machine ever made by Singer.

    I don't know on your machine, but on mine I push in the right front knob. When I release it, it stitches forward.
