Are these services necessary?

These were recommended to me after an oil change:

- auto transmission service

- fuel system cleaning

- fuel filter service

What are they and do I really need to do them?

Update:

I have a 2005 Mariner with 68,000 miles.

Auto trans service = Every 2 years.

Injector cleaning... last thing you may try befor changing an injector for a problem.

    Fuel filter EVERY YEAR.

Transmission fluid & fuel filter: If you user manual says you should change them at those intervals and you haven't had them done, then do it.

Fuel system cleaning: It's not a requirement, but it is a good idea to do this. if you always use brand name fuel, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But it you use cheap gas like most of us, do it. No, not all gasoline contains detergents. The cheap gasolines only carry an additive package that satisfies the EPA. They do nothing for the longevity of your engine.

    1. yes. an auto trans service should be done every 30-50k and cleans out the fluid in your trans much as an oil change does in an engine.

    2. no. once upon a time it was a good idea, with gas and detergents today, use a system cleaner from autozone annually and save the change.

    3. yes. frequency is dependent on your car, but a fuel filter should be replaced and will save you a break down, fuel pump issues and other problems.

when you go in for a tune up most of those things along with spark plugs should be in the service agreement.

you could probably change your own fuel filter but if not go for the tune up and ask what is involved with the services.

they are very important! changing the transmission oil and filter helps the transmission change gears better and helps them last longer. changing the gas filter help to keep the injectors clean.

I believe that you already have a good, *General -- all-'round* answer for *anyone* with *any kind of usual run-of-the-mill automobile*.

*BUT*!! If you are a knowledgeable owner of a "beloved" automobile, about which you have a most 'rudimentary knowledge' concerning the proper upkeep and maintenance thereof, -- Oh! and if you have the 'Owners' Manual' therefor! *THEN* I would advise you to *Come Forward* to announce your *special knowledge* about your automobile!

If transmissin shifts normally its OK.

Fuel system sometimes will pick up sediments from tanks when they are filled it could cause fuel filters to clog.Unless its running rough or hesitates I wouldn't worry.Check with owners manuel about proper maintence.

nbproweb hit it on the head, and fuel system cleanings are way overdone and really dont benefit you unless you have and problem already.

Your owner's manual probably outlines them for regular service at various intervals...You really do need all of them if they haven't been done at all. Or you can take the risk of having your car not respond when it is needed the most.

    1. check your tranny fluid dipstick, if its pink its OK, if its brownish orange, change it, tranny fluid is usually replaced every 100K, but you dont put new fluid in you drain out the old fluid, put in a new filter and gasket and put the old fluid back in, putting new tranny fluid in a transmission is damaging

    2. no, but its highly recommended, u can do this yourself, you can buy it at wal mart for 5 bucks, put it in the fuel tank when its near empty and fill the fuel tank to full and run the car

    3. no, this should be done every 100K
