Blu Ray player outputs an HD signal and plays blu ray disks that are 1080p, 1080 lines per inch and all the newest sounds.

DVD player outputs an SD signal and plays disks that are 480p, 480 lines per inch.

The blu ray can play regular dvds, the regular dvd player can only play regular dvds.

If you have an HD tv, 40" or larger, you need a blu ray.

If you just have an SD tv, there is no use for a blu ray.
