Buying a 1996-1999 5.9L 12 valve dodge diesel?

I am looking for a 1996-1999 5.9L 12 valve Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel, with these engines are there common or hidden problems that make them not worth the time or should I be fairly confident with it? Does anyone have any hints or tricks to look for warning signs with these vehicles to run away when seen?

These things last to about 500k miles with poor maintenance, with proper they can last twice as long. The cummins is the best engine ever made. The only things wrong with the dodge cummins rams are the transmission, they suck. everything else is good

The engine is made by Cummins, and is one of, if not the best, engine ever put in a pick up.

Do a search for Cummins 6BT to find more information on the engine.

I'd be more worried about the rest of the truck.

As the others have posted....Cummins diesel is the best, hands down. However, get all maintenance records for the truck, especially the tranny, they junk.
