How do you teach budgies to fly?

I just got a new budgie and he has been in the pet store for the most of his life. He wasn't let out in the store so he cannot fly.

He tries to fly but goes straight down and keeps bashing his head. I'm concerned that he'll have an injury.

Update:

By the way one of his wings is longer than the other. Can this affect it?

Update 2:

How do you unclip 'em

Update 3:

thanks guys

Its very possible that his wings have been clipped. Are the base of his wings flat? If they are you'll have to wait until new feathers come through before ge'll be able to fly.

I don't know that a budgie wouldn't know how to fly. Even if its always been in a small cage. Its natural instincts for them to know how to fly.

See how he goes and let us know if he starts flying! :D

It sounds like his wings have been clipped. One is probably growing faster than the other. My budgies' wings are all clipped, so none of them fly high. They always end up on the floor. They are more likely to injure themselves if they are flying around the house. I'd advise keeping the wings clipped. The budgie doesn't have to be taught how to fly, unless you are keeping them in an aviary. If he is in a cage, he shouldn't be flying around. Some birds, like finches, do need to keep their wings so they can fly around their cages.

At pet stores they clip the wings which is good because it can keep them out of trouble. They will grow back soon and you dont have to teach a bird to fly. He'll get it on his own.

His wings have been clipped. They will grow back and he will figure out how to fly on his own.

It is not that he doesn't know how to fly. His flight may somehow has something to do with the wings.

My guess is that his wings are clipped.

Go to www.parrotparrot.com and finf the ''wing clipping'' video. If one wing has feathers larger than the other, please clip this. Your bird is losing balance and will probably crash-land until you clip it. Wait until they grow back evenly and then decide if you want him to fly or not.

his wings are probably clipped so that he can't fly :(
