Mailing beef jerky to Japan?

Hi,

I bought some beef jerky FROM Costco and was going to mail it to Japan, now I am hearing that it is forbidden. I understand that the Japanese Costco is selling the same thing. So does anyone have some experience in this area?

Update:

i realize at one time it wasn't allowed but I think the ban was lifted, I am just wanting confirmation.

Japan has not lifted ban against North American beef products except special products manufactured at the approved plants. Those products have to have USDA certificates to enable to ship to Japan even if it is not commercial shipment but just personal purpose or freesample.

The Costco retail products sold at USA is not permitted to come into Japan legally as far as just it is as is.

It is because of Mad Cow problem you know very well. Japanese Costco imported the goods with USDA certificate. That's why they can do and you can't. If you ask USDA inspector to issue the certificate to attach the shipment, it will be no problem. It costs more than US$200 though.

I had some jerky(store bought) sent from Canada and customs in Japan confiscated it. They sent me a letter telling me they did so and wanted me to contact them to give the them OK to destroy it. I never did contact them as it was futile since I couldn't get the jerky anyways. Basically, I understand that NO meat products(cooked or uncooked) whatsoever can be mailed/brought privately into Japan.
