What can the US do about guns?
Just reading about this horrible "Santa shooter" in California.
Every time there's a massacre people cop out and use the excuse that a knife/screwdriver/car etc could kill people as well.
Am I the only one who'd much rather go up in a crowded room against a maniac with a Swiss Army Knife than an Armalite?
As a resident alien (from Australia) I came here understanding the difference in gun culture in the USA and have done my best not to make too many waves, but seeing shooting after shooting (particularly in schools) I'm starting to wonder how long until the penny drops and people realise that the ready availability of the world's most efficient portable killing implement is somehow connected to the high frequency of massacres in The United States.
I don't advocate a blanket ban (or a total ban on semi automatics as we have in Australia), but as an outsider coming in, the situation and desensitization to firearms here is borderline frightning.
The question is - what to do? There's clearly a problem.
I agree with people who say it isn't the guns but the people using them - but that's my whole point. If people are going to do this sort of thing is it wise to give them such easy access to the tools?
If spelling mistakes caused by pencils caused multiple fatalities I'd want some sort of tough regulation into their use too.

"Am I the only one who'd much rather go up in a crowded room against a maniac with a Swiss Army Knife than an Armalite?"
Tell it to the people who faced box cutters on the airplane on 9/11...
You mentioned school shootings; a terrible thing compounded by laws which prevent anyone being able to provide protection.

See - that's the point: regulation of this nature does not work. By definition, a criminal ignores the law, while those of us who obey are penalized.
You want crime control, not gun control.

nicely, i'm not professional-gun administration by any ability, in certainty I own a gun, yet i'm going to handle those factors. a million. No i don't think of the king of britain is going to start pushing me around. on the different hand, if america is ever invaded, you have a super team of people already armed that would desire to be whipped right into a protection tension particularly in the present day to assist out with the protection of our land. 2. easily fairly some issues kill human beings, in 2005 there have been 30,694 gun deaths in the united stateswhilst the comparable twelve months there have been 40 3,443 deaths related to vehicles. weapons are equipment, and can want for use staggering. 3. that's easily a competent factor. in case you're knowledgeable with your firearm you may react particularly in the present day to a concern alongside with a gunman happening a taking photos spree in a mall. Many gruesome situations in america that includes somebody killing fairly some others with a gun in many situations contain a place familiar to be seen risk-free. colleges, department stores, the paintings place. And in maximum circumstances one man or woman, in the sumptuous place and armed, might have stopped the area chilly. 4. that's the main appropriate reason i think of america will continually have weapons, and in super numbers. we are between the few international locations the place if the government steps over a line and starts off to get rid of the freedoms we at present get exhilaration from, we the individuals can soak up our palms and overthrow our government. whilst that's an extremely gruesome theory, we a minimum of have that determination. As to why I own a gun? that is not through fact i'm some form of superhero, or James Bond, or any of the different labels anti-gun individuals decide to positioned on me. i decide to have the alternative of having the flexibility to apply my gun if I ever, heaven forbid, discover myself wanting a gun. straightforward as that.

England has a no gun policy, so everybody just beats the heck out of each other. But the situation with guns in the U.S. trails back with the U.S. Constitution, which give you the right to bear arms. This right was made to protect ourselves since the U.S. was fighting the British back in the day... more than 200 years have passed. And Legislators have constantly made and changed laws, to prevent the misuse of firearms. For example, an ex-convict must never be in the possession of firearm. However, any laws involving firearms must always respect the Constitution. For example (and this might sound ironic), if you wish carried a loaded firearm, you must have a license. However it's not illegal to carry around an empty firearm in its case, with the ammunition in your pocket. Another example, you do not need a license to have a loaded firearm in your home, vehicle, or place of work... but it becomes a problem walking to your drive way, to get into your car to drive to work, once there you need to step out of your car.
Authorities have started programs to get guns out of the streets, like rewarding people with cash for turning them in.
People do have the right to protect themselves, but there is definitely a problem with people who don't respect other people. I cannot see an immediate solution to this concerning matter.

Lock up violent offender for life. The one thing all crimes have in common is that a human criminal is responsible.
The other thing to understand is that an armed victim stands a heck of a better chance against an armed criminal then an unarmed victim.
EDIT:
Wasn't the attacker an immigrant from Serbia????

I own guns and will always. I think the real problem here is people in America can't seem to channel their frustrations or anger properly. Also, you can't tell me that no one had any idea that this guy was this way (ready to fall off of his rocker). To me, guns aren't the problem (they will always be in this America) it is peoples attitudes and morals have changed.

I don't know, but I don't agree with the NRA cop-out that "criminals will always be able to obtain a gun" and that arming everybody is the best solution to crime. One way or other, criminals steal or otherwise obtain their guns from law-abiding citizens, so it's common sense that not allowing anybody to own guns would keep them out of the hands of criminals as well. Besides, no individual can ever outgun the mafia or a drug gang. Europe doesn't have any tradition about a right to bear arms, their people are just as democratic and free from government oppression as we are, and their murder rates are far lower than ours.

there are alot more guns already out there s you cant just make them illegal. if you wanna be safe get one yourself. if they had a firearm in that house that asshole would have got shot alot sooner rather then killing 9 people.

To say guns are responsible for killing people is like saying pencils are responsible for misspelled words.

There is no answer. Criminals will always have access to weapons, on the black market, or by theft. If you don't like guns move back with the kangaroos.
