00 Dodge Neon Timing Problem?

Cannot get running after engine swap. Replaced a friends engine with one out of a 2003. Had to swap a few things over but basically went in without any major problem. The only major thing I had to do was route the crank sensor wire from the back of the engine by the alternator, to the front of the engine under the intake. Replaced timing belt and water pump and checked timing five different times, and still will not start. It has fuel and spark, but will only backfire through the intake and act like it wants to start, them the engine will catch up and stop rotating until I try to turn over again. Never had this problem before. Help.

Update:

Engine also has good compression, along with spark and fuel.

the 2000 and 2003 crank sensor target rings are a different design from each other. in other words, the pcm cant figure out where tdc on #1 cylinder is. you may need to replace the pcm with one from an 03 model that can decipher the crank signal its getting, since the programming in the 00 model can't. by the way, the target ring is not replaceable on the 00 model, its part of the crank. in the future, if you have to relocate a crank sensor, odds are the target ring has changed design. hope this helps.

Chrysler changed how the crank sensor works in 2003. So the old sensor/computer can't read the crank trigger correctly.

You should do a search on www.neons.org to find the info you need.

i ran across this on one car we did and had to change the computer on it before it would actually start and run,it would try to start like yours is doing but it wouldn't actually run,it has something to do with the computer on it,i know after changing it, it ran good,if it were me Id go back over and check the timing once more,it sounds like that one is trying to run if you change the computer on it chances are that will cure your problem with it ,good luck.
