How long does it take a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix dog's fur to grow out? ?
Her mother is 1/2 Yorkie 1/2 Chihuahua, her father is pure Yorkie. The puppy in question is just under eight weeks old and is actually smooth coated right now. Black/brown, with tan points on feet, ears, and face, and she has a little spot of white on each paw, on her chest and little bits of it around her mouth. I was told her mother looked like this when she was younger, but that her hair grew out as she aged, and I've read that Yorkies can be born smooth coated...is this true?

It can take up to 2 years for an adult coat to fully grow in.
If the pup is smooth coated tho, most likely it will be smooth coated.. if it was going to have long hair, it would at least have a somewhat plush coat as a puppy.
Yorkies do not come in smooth coats.

all dogs are born smooth, esemtially, although there are signs or
indications that they will get long hair later in life
hair growth or lack of it would depend on the genes it got from the parents
it would sem to be that the Yorkie genes (based on this mating) would kick in and make it more Yorkie than chihuahua, but then again, long hair is recessive, so it might not get the long coat.
At eight weeks one should see the long coat start to develope (before then, really).
I suspect the pup is not going to go long -- at the best, sort of 1/2, and I doubt that is going to be very long.

Since it's a mix, it could take after the chichuahua instead of the yorkie. It's just life. You mix breed dogs, and you never know what will happen.
Source(s): I own a mutt, too!!! =] She's 1/2 Siberian husky. We don't know what her father was, so our dog looks like a short haired husky.
