Romantic/Comedy dying out?
About a day ago I put up a question asking for help with my romantic comedy story I'm writing. I came across one answer that said that today's romance movies stereotype guys and can harm relationships.
I've been working on this story since last year, but now that I hear about this...I don't know if I should continue or not. I really want this story tio get published, but I'm worried that it'll hurt relationships.
So I was wondering if I could have your opinion. Is the romantic/comedy genre dying out?
Wow! So many answers to choose from. Thank you all so much. All of your answers were encouraging and inspiring. I feel better about writing my story. Thanks again!

The romantic-comedy (romcom) genre is certainly not dying out. Any film that is cheap to make and can gross a profit will be studios first choice. These include horrors and romcoms.
Just look at the number of romcoms this year: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Sex and the City, What Happens in Vegas, Definitely Maybe, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, 27 Dresses, Made of Honor, Fool's Gold, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, etc. There will always be a place for romcoms because they're light, funny, warm-hearted... just what the majority of the public want to see.
Of course they're stereotypical... most mainstream movies are. It's rare for a romcom to actually have intelligence behind it, and those films are the ones that people would argue that doesn't fit the romcom genre, such as Knocked Up, Annie Hall, Juno, and Shakespear in Love. The writing and styles are fresh in these films... not predictable and formulaic.
And according to Box Office Mojo's top grossing Romantic Comedies... the top three romcoms have been movies since 2000. The top ten are films from 1990 and later.
The romantic comedy genre is here to stay and will never die out. So keep writing your story becasue there's always room for another romcom. Just try to make it fresh and unique.
Hope this helps.

I wouldnt say romantic/comedy genre is dying for as long as you have romantics (guys as well as girls) you will always have a captive audience. Everyone deep down love a little romance and a laugh along the way.
Keep writing!!!

Spanglish with Adam Sandler. chuffed Gilmore has romance in it. Failure to launch with Sarah Jessica Parker and Matt McConaughey, A stroll to keep in mind w/ Mandy Moore is extra romantic then comedy.

It's dying out for the reason that was suggested. People give false portrayals of guys and even girls, which can be very funny, but at the same time it's not true, and damage things to a certain degree. The key is to make it realistic, but at the same time make it interesting.
