Recommended chimney cleaning schedule...?
Had my first chimney fire this evening. Had it inspected and capped about seven years ago and all was well after 15 years of use. Recently started using our fireplace more frequently, several times a week. Any recommendations for a schedule?

Their are chimney sweeping logs you can buy and they will take care of the creosote build up, caused by wood burning. If you use your fire place every day, like we do. Two logs per season will do. At the end of the season sweep your chimney, every single year. It's the best insurance for protecting your property

The chimney sweep logs work well IF you start with clean chimney and then use them on a regular schedule. Have your chimney cleaned with a brush at least once per year, more if you are burning green ,(wet), wood.. You can get pretty much the same results by burning a really hot fire about once per month, that will clear out the light layer of creosote that is building up from small fires.

Our chimney sweep gave us these guidelines recommended by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps -
Open fire burning coal or smokeless fuel - every 12 months
Multi fuel stove (when in use) every 3 months.
Cannot recommend our chimney sweep enough www.leicesterchimneysweep.com

Once yearly is just fine. I've been burning wood for over 40 years, and have the sweep in during the fall, and have had no problems. Below are a couple of articles I found that are interesting.

You can also purchase a more permanent furnace filter that can be removed and cleaned regularly instead of the disposable filters you find in your local hardware store. http://www.furnace-water-heaters.com/furnace-filte... - Anonymous1 decade ago
if you are using it often and the wood is not dried properly the creosote will catch fire so it's best to have it cleaned early Fall every year or buy a brush and have someone do it for you .
