I travel back and forth between the US and Canada at least once a month and as long as you aren't traveling by air (which I assume you're not) all that you need is photo ID and a second piece of identification such as a birth certificate, study permit, or certificate of naturalization. I doubt you need a passport. I haven't been there in a few years so laws may have changed. It would be smart to have one. I went without a passport.

However they do check criminal records, so if you have record of any kind, they may not allow you in. They are very tight about who they let through.

And they check I-pods and computers and such for illegally downloaded torrents and files

I think you do now. I went last year and all I needed was my birth certificate. But I believe that now you do need a passport. Security has grown tighter.
