The BEST thing to do is read the law for yourself...since you have been given a great deal of misinformation. See site below. Adults now need a photo I.D. and birth certificate and children need a birth certificate to cross the border by land.

    No you don't.

I travel back and forth between the US and Canada at least once a month and as long as you aren't traveling by air (which I assume you're not) all that you need is photo ID and a second piece of identification such as a birth certificate, study permit, or certificate of naturalization. I've never been asked for a passport. Hope that helps :)

confident, you will choose a passport or an greater driving force's license to go into Canada from the U. S. by utilising motor vehicle. Its no longer lots which you decide on one to go into Canada, you decide on one to get decrease back into the U. S.. so as that they require you have a passport or greater drivers license to go into Canada so which you don't get stranded interior the country without some time past to the U. S..

nope you don't need a passport for "LAND & SEA" travel to Canada....you need a government issued photo ID i.e drivers license and your original birth certificate. You need a valid passport if you're flying.Passport requirements for Land & Sea travel delayed til Summer 2009

Until June 2009, US citizens don't need a passport for land or sea travel. You need one if you're flying.

I doubt you need a passport. I haven't been there in a few years so laws may have changed. It would be smart to have one. I went without a passport.

However they do check criminal records, so if you have record of any kind, they may not allow you in. They are very tight about who they let through.

And they check I-pods and computers and such for illegally downloaded torrents and files

I think you do now. I went last year and all I needed was my birth certificate. But I believe that now you do need a passport. Security has grown tighter.

Not if you are driving, at least until the summer of 2009. You'll be asked basic questions by the Canadian border patrol.

As of 2008 yes, you do. Canada and also Mexico are now required to have passports to travel in their borders

Source(s): I traveled to Guatelama and was told that I would need one to travel to Canaca and Mexico.
