i assume you know how to install processors? your motherboard may be outdated... grab your manual and look around and find out what's the latest processors you can use in it. good luck.
edit: quadcores aren't useful for much. go with 8500 if you can.

certain, improve to a minimum of 2Gb, the hot well-known. bypass to the dell internet web site and to be certain what variety you elect. could be everywhere from $20-40. this can heavily advance your pcs performance. pcs are starting to be more inexpensive, and also you may get a good twin center processor for $500 and a minimum of 2Gb's of ram and an exceedingly roomy 200Gb not basic force. in case you elect to make that leap. you probable won't be able to improve the images card in that laptop considering PCI convey did not quite come on that many pcs decrease back then, so in case you improve your entire laptop and then improve the images card for a a lengthy way better laptop than the only you've today.

i dont want to disappoint you but as soon as you put those parts in your computer they will basically be obsolete.
if you were going to go for an upgrade i would go for the core 2 duo e8500 if your board supports it.
and if your budget stretches go for 1T hard drive unless you plan on upgrading to vista i wouldn't advise a memory upgrade
