Why would anyone buy a VW Jetta Diesel? ?
sure it gets 41 MPG, but why would people buy this? I agree if someone likes diesel engines... but that's it.
1. Fuel filter change every 20,000 miles = $30.00 (part)
2.Oil change: You have to use Volkswagan's special 507.00 oil at the dealer. Each quart is $10 and you need 5 of them. YOu can't get cheaper ones at an auto parts store because none of them are 507.00.
3. Diesel is 2 times expensive than regular gas.
QUestion: Why would anyone buy a diesel?
You're wrong. On VW gas cars, you do not have to change the fuel filter for the life of the vehicle. On my MItsubishi, you don't have to change it until 60,000 miles.
Diesel filters are twice or three times the cost of gas filters.
507.00 VW approved Oil... not $507.00..... duh!
KB, Check your owners manual. I'll bet you it says "Fuel filter change is not required"
I used to own a Jetta... I know.
kb, that's if you own the new model bug, not the vintage ones.
KB, The oil change is more than $50 if you do it yourself.
On my mitsubishi Eclipse, an oil change only cost me about $10

Diesels in the past were purchased because of their long life; fuel economy was always better than a gas engine of the same displacement, but horsepower was less and low end torque was always more....
Diesels can have an overhaul cost that is slightly lower than a gas engine; yes, you must use special oil (Mobil 1 0-40 European formula meets standard 505.01 (as I understand it, the only difference between 507.00 and 505 is the weight of the oil -- 507.000 is 0-30) and filters that need replacement more often. (You can purchase Mobil 1 european formula 0-40 at Walmart for $6.00 per quart or less).
Diesels don't have ignition coils that can fail; spark plugs or ignition cables that can wear out and other parts related to usage of gasolene in a motor. A major service on a diesel is less expensive than a gasolene engine, I've done a cost comparision a while back between a 2.0 liter gas engine vs. 1.9 TDI motor and the overall costs are about 7% less for the diesel motor over 100,000 miles even considering the fuel economy difference and maintance vs a 2.0 liter gas motor.
One factor that you have not considered is the depreciation factor; the depreciation factor for a gas engined VW (save for things like GLI / GTI etc) are much higher than for a diesel of the same year.
According to the Kelly Blue web site, the trade in value for a 2003 Golf GL 2 door 5 speed base edition with 80,000 miles in excellent condition is $5875, vs. 2003 Golf 2dr. GL TDI base edition with the same miles is $8925 or a difference of $3050!!. It is true that the MSRP of the diesel (according to Kelly Blue Book for new cars, 2003 second edition) was $1425 higher, but the diesel also included traction control which was not available on the gasolene version of the base GL!
The point that I'm trying to make is that on a strictly financial issue, the diesel does make sense to some people. On a financial side only, my guess is that the 2003 Golf GL TDI cost per mile is about 22% less when depreciation is also factored in.
Hope this helps, a car nut.

To piss you off since you obviously hate it.
Compared to the gasoline Jetta, the diesel Jetta has much better resale, twice the fuel economy, less carbon emissions per mile, and is much more driveable due to low end power.
Even though VW has "lifetime gas fuel filters", talk to any mechanic, they should be changed every 100,000 miles max. If you don't change it, it stresses the fuel pump and results in slightly lower fuel pressure. Your other comments are equally as ignorant.
I can buy a used 1985 subaru if I let the buyer kick me in the nuts, why would I pay $23,000 for a Ford Explorer?

I have a VW Diesel, and would like to clear a few things up
1. Diesel is currently $1.38 ltr where I live regular is $1.45 ltr.....no clue how you are getting double the price for a fuel that costs less.
2. Oil and filter change is $80 for full synthetic at the dealership, same price as a full synth change anywhere on any car. only changing it ever 15k km, as opposed to 5k on a regular oil car. so actually costs less than the $45 x 3 = $135
3. Diesel cars burn fuel cooler so they get better millage, I currently get 1200km to a 55ltr tank
4. Fuel filter is changed ever second oil change for roughly $90
other than that if you have the dsg you need to service that ever 60Kkm its about $400
I have had mine about 2 years and love it, its the best car I have owned in ages, very well built, fit and finish are nice and handles very well. I have a Golf TDI.

Diesels have come a long way, they have less moving parts(no spark plugs, distributer, etc, etc.)Diesel cannot run on gasoline. Diesel also will run longer with fewer maintenance. It is a matter of personal preferences, you will get more Miles per Gallon but finding diesel in your area would be your major concern. Yes it worth the difference and the car will retain its value

fuel filters should be changed on a gas vehicle at 20,000 miles as well. real world highway driving regularly results in 50 mpg. you can use a different brand oil with the correct viscosity. diesel engines yield 10% more than a gas engine in its energy efficiency and they regularly outlast their gasoline counterparts.
and by the way, 5 quarts at $10 a quart is $50.00 not $507.00.

1. same thing for regular cars
2. only about 15 bucks more than regular oil
3. gas and diesel is about the same here..
um..
no your wrong,
why would you not change the fuel filter?
you put the same gas in the car whether its a vw or mitsubishi
and i have a vw bug, so i should know..
and same price for the filter

you can convert ANY diesel engine to run on cooking oil and never worry about fuel prices again.
