This is said with the idea that it is possible to end up worse than you began. So, to avoid this, the person who said this believes that if you monitor a situation closely with the end result in mind and what could happen against you between now and the end result, then you might see the possibility that if you "quit", in whatever form that may take, whether it's selling your stocks before they lose value, or, if you quit playing poker after winning a large pot in one hand, you stand the chance of "winning" or coming out ahead, as opposed to if you stayed involved until the end.

In other words, "quit while you are ahead" could be seen as an exception to the rule of "quitters never win and winners never quit".

It seems the phrase "winners never quit and quitters never win" more often applies to those activities where you cannot quit and must participate until the end, like a sports event, where if you quit or stop giving your best effort, you obviously cannot win...

whereas, there are some things that you can participate in and you can "quit" anytime, you don't have to "play" until the end, so, in fact, the smart thing to do is sometimes try and "quit when you're ahead"...

A quitter quits before getting to the end.

A winner doesn't quit till the end.

When dealing with quit while your ahead implies that there may not be an end so to speak. If I was to buy a loto ticket and won a million dollars and I quit while I was ahead would be smart. However, If I continued to play and loose the million dollars, that would be foolish. As for how said it, I don't know.

Nice. That shows that proverbs aren't true for all possible cases. However in some circumstances "quit while you're ahead" is a wise thing to be reminded of, for example: if you start gambling and win a huge pile in the first few minutes it is tempting to gradually spend it in the hope of winning even more, when obviously the rational thing to do would be to quit.

I suppose "quitters never win" applies to someone who has quit before accomplishing anything. "Quit while you're ahead" applies to someone who has won to some degree.

It's not like they're contradictory of each other, in fact they make perfect sense.

If you uit while you're ahead, you will have never won, but not risked losing everything (but the last part isn't related, so whatever)

Well, the statement never said that anybody can win at all. Maybe no one can win. It is, indeed, a possibility.

A realist. You cannot win everything. Sometimes you have to quit.

The question as a whole is rhetorical and has no logical basis.

The answer, technically, I'm sure no one knows.
