It really depends on the headache. Headaches that occur because of a secondary factor, a head injury for example, are not the same as a primary headache.
Migraine is a disease and should be treated as a disease. They don't know why some people have it or how to cure it. There are so many people out there that try to make money from other people suffering from migraines, that many people are misinformed about them.
If you do have migraines and they are interrupting your life on a regular basis, you will need a preventative - beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, antieleptics, anti depressants, and a whole other host of medications that have been determined to help. The first one you try many not help, or the 20th one you try may not help, but 96% of people find one of these many medications or combination of them help. They may just reduce pain or reduce frequency, but anything is better.
Have you tried triptans before? These are medications specifically designed for people with migraines. There are 7 of them, 8 if you include the new one that is a combination of one of them and aleve.
If your doc can't help, see if he can refer you to a neurologist.

Any number of things can cause headaches, it totally depends on the type of headache. For the ones you are describing though these are some triggers/causes:
-food allergies/sensitivites- red wine and chocolate are big trouble makers
-tumor or cyst pressing on certain areas of the brain
-drug use
-alcohol use
-hypertoned muscle in the neck, shoulders, back and head
For migraines the best thing is usually just to isolate yourself in a dark quiet room. I find heat triggering when I have migraines, so a cool compress might help. Talk with your doctor about possibly causes so you can eliminate or limit them. Find a good massage therapist with experience treating headaches.
