Conspiracy Theory: Global Warming?
Is it possible that there is a global conspiracy to NOT prevent global warming in the hope that the oil reserves trapped under the ice will become available, and the north west passage will open up to reduce shipping times??

There are several basic logic errors in concepts about alternative energy sources. First is solar cells and the fact that they will not produce as much energy in their lifetimes as they use in being produced and the disposal of manufacturing waste from them. The original concept for solar cells is they would be used in huge satellites, produced in orbital factories from lunar or other orbital materials sources. Here they would operate at 4 times the efficiency they can on earth because the filtering affect of the atmosphere is removed. Also in orbit they would operate 24 hours a day where on earth over a year they might average 6 to 7 hours a day. And then there is the waste issue, in orbit the materials can be easily turned into something else usable where on earth because of environmental laws they must be put into a dump instead of being recycled. Because of silly environmental laws the US now recycles less than one third of the manufacturing waste they did just 50 years ago and it costs more to dump it instead of recycling it.
Wind turbines are also very inefficient and currently their power costs more than any other because of just a few basic facts that are due to design flaws in the machinery itself. The main problem is the propeller on a post design copied from the old Celtic windmills of 1000 years ago. There are new and better designs out there that could be used but they are not acceptable to the environmental community because they are not visible. So the why things are not proceeding is mostly because the major environmental organizations are only letting those programs that pay them off with enough money proceed. And the fossil fuel producers pay the best so the real answers like nuclear and space based solar have laws written to keep them from doing what they could, at least in the US.

The global warming deniers are growing fewer and fewer. Like Area 51, it is hard to prove or disprove global warming 100% because of uncertainties about what the future will bring, but way more immediate and circumstantial evidence points toward a trend in rising temperatures. Many deniers of global warming think that if it's cold today, then global warming does not exist. Some of them get a little scientific about it and point out that the earth has gone through many changes of climate and that what we are experiencing is just a natural cycle, despite the fact that the current rate is much quicker and the real cause is pretty obvious. This view is encouraged by industry, which has a lot to lose if people start demanding an end to pollution. They would have to spend millions cleaning up their factories, face stiff fines, or go out of business if they were compelled to stop polluting. However, despite the fact that it still gets cold (sometimes) in winter, many people are noticing that record high temperatures are occurring all over the country. People are dying from extremely hot temperatures, and that won't be ignored. The conspiracy theorists can flap their jaws all they want, but it won't change the fact that more countries are industrializing, more cars are being driven each year, and that plant life that would absorb a lot of pollution is being torn down at an alarming rate to make way for hot pavement.

There are two conspiracy floating around
the denier one (actually several)
Global conspiracy by all Government to tax us
Global conspiracy by Communists to (not sure what really)
Global conspiracy by the U.N. to rule the world
all have not a shred of evidence to support them
The believer one
Oil companies are funding a campaign to stop or slow action on GW so they can continue to make billions of dollars from what remains of the oil reserves as action on GW would seriously reduce their profits.
Any of the denier conspiracies would require 10s of thousands of people to be in on it, highly unlikely
the believer on would require only a few dozen oil executives and a couple hundred people in funded groups to spread the mis-information.
Oil companies funding of deniers groups is happening by their own admission with dozens of wild theories of all types coming from these groups, they are certainly have some effect on public opinion.
Fictions that can be seen in some of the answers here
i.e. Solar cells recover their build energy in ~ 8 years
Wind turbines are used by many remote communities and even an Antarctic scientific station and comparing them to something the Celts used is nonsense unless the Celts had aluminum and carbon fiber.
And there are no laws that stop space based solar, it has never happed because there is no way to get the power back to Earth to use. They have been talking about microwave transmission since the 70's but have only been able to get to work over short distances and the power loss is over 50% talk of such things is about the same as the wright brothers talking about worldwide jet travel, an interesting idea but many decades away at best.

Global warming is a loaded term. Use Climate change instead. It will focus on the issue more accurately.
To answer your question, yes, it is entirely possible since the oil companies are the first to buy patents on alternative energy. I don;t believe for a moment they can more money on windmill farms, solar power, hydrogen fuel or electric batteries. They hire very expensive mouth

I seriously doubt it. Although.....GreenGirl is right. We do need to do more to prevent global pollution. I suggest that she and her cohorts turn their eyes to Communist China for starters. Their on-going pollution makes the United States look like a drop in the bucket. After she cleans up China, she can turn to India, then Mexico, then.....(add 3rd world nation of your choice now). What ever you do...get off the backs of the Western World. They are the only countries that have done anything to help! .....sheesh!

I doubt it, because it would be pointless as oil will eventually run out regardless of what we do. Global warming is REAL, and people are slowing starting to realize it. We all need to do more to help protect our environment.

Get off that liberal blog and read real science. The world is actually cooling.
