Why don't Macs get viruses like other pcs?
My daughter bought herself an I-Mac and I get to play on it (never used a computer before) and they told her at the Apple store that Macs don't need all the anti-virus programs like other pcs, and I was wondering why?

Macs have not been a high priority target of virus creators because of the relatively few users. I do not know enough about them to say if they're more secure in any way, but it's not unlikely.
The same goes for Linux systems such as Ubuntu, they simply aren't targeted.

Macs can and do get viruses. It's just much less common because almost everyone uses a Windows-based PC (I believe Windows has over 80% market share). As such, virus writers design their viruses to target Windows since it's the dominant platform.
It has NOTHING to do with Macs being any more secure than PCs. It's just that they're less popular. Check out this little video on a fun little virus for Mac. It demonstrates how easy a Mac can get infected:

The simple answer, most viruses are written for Windows. Windows has the largest market share and is therefore the biggest target. Secondly OS X is more secure as it is based on Linux.
Even though there have been rumors of Mac viruses, none have been proven or released in the wild that spread as Windows viruses do. The last two claims were reported by a company wishing to sell it's anti-virus protection.
My feeling has always been that I'm not going to pay good money for a program to detect what doesn't exist yet.
The link listed below isn't actually a virus at all but more of a prank application. It has no way of spreading as virus do and does no actual damage other than pestering the user for a few minutes.

it incredibly is a numbers interest. desktops make up maximum folk of desktops used via universal human beings. hence, once you're someone finding to get the main bang to your greenback, you create a plague that could have the features of infecting the main desktops. desktops supply that capacity. Macs, in spite of if, are actually not invulnerable to viruses. The classified ads on television brag with regard to the shortcoming of viruses that focus on Macs maximum advantageous maximum folk to falsely have faith that they are immune. With Macs acceptance transforming into, virus assaults are going to proceed to upward push as human beings seem to exploit the "maximum bang to your greenback" theory. All-in-all: desktops purely outnumber Macs and allow a format to reason super devastation, that's why they're focused greater often than Macs. in spite of if, look for an advance in Mac viruses as their acceptance rises. God bless!
