you need gold membership to play online with others. if you get the free silver membership you can only shop on the online marketplace

to play with other people you need a gold membership wich varies in costs and silver membership is free and u can use your msn etc and download content from the xbox market place

Gold is $50 for the year and allows you to play online with friends.
Silver is free and allows you to chat with people and send messages, but no online game playing privileges.
