African American Independence Question?

What kind of examples showed that African Americans wanted their own independence after the Civil War?

    If by independence you mean a separate nation, then an example would be the number of them who moved to Liberia, the African country founded by former American slaves.

    If you mean self-determination, then it would be their pursuit of education and family-owned farms post-Civil War.

    Depends on how you define independence. Many were given land in west Africa and established the nation of Liberia. Some after the turn of the century joined the Marcus Garvey movement to establish a separate African American homeland. This was later resurrected with the Nation of Islam movement in the 40's 50's 60's under Elijah Muhammad. None of these movements gathered that much enthusiasm among the majority though. Today, very few African Americans are calling for independence but are calling for equality among diversity.
