Why is the former MLB pitcher Bob Caruthers not in the Hall of Fame? In 9 seasons from 1884 - 1892, his ?
record was 218 wins and 99 losses, 298 complete games. I know this guy played like 130 years ago, but his numbers were great. He should be in, you agree?

Bob Caruthers played 10 Seasons.
He pitched from 1884-1892 and played in 12 games in 1893 as an OF with 50+ plate appearances.
The man should be in the HOF.
There are only 3 players in the history of the game with 200+ wins and less than 100 losses and one of those is Pedro Martinez with 99 losses. If Pedro loses one more game, only Caruthers and Al Spalding will hold the honor.
His CG total ranks him in the top 50 all-time and his career ERA was 0.63 lower than the League average in the years he played.
Compare his career with that of Jack Chesbro ( HOF pitcher - http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/chesbja01.shtm... ) and tell me why Bob is NOT in the HOF.
Bob Caruthers without a doubt belongs in the Hall of Fame.

He only played nine years, and you have to take the era into account. In the 1880s the baseball talent pool was diluted - the minors were not like they are now, and they had many top players, plus there were two major leagues (three in 1884) and only white players to choose from - blacks and Hispanics need not apply. Teams had two-man rotations, and win totals were about 1.5x what they are now - so 218 wins equates to about 150 wins in modern times. Very good, but not good enough for the Hall.

No. There are so many others well ahead of him....a complete game in those days was normal since there were no relief pitchers then.
Tossing the ball over the plate in the dead ball era when 5 HR's lead the league is no stresss on the arm.
Cy Young pitched back then and had 500 wins....218 is not enough, it just means he played on a good team.

Yes those are VERY good numbers, but in order to get into the Hall Of Fame, the players have to play in at least 10 seasons.

You have to play ten years to qualify for the HOF.
PS - after looking at his stats, if he would have just played a partial tenth season, he would be in. Addie Joss didn't play nine full seasons and he got in because he died, but technically he shouldn't be in.

Maybe the writers that saw him play can talk to the Veterans committee.
