In order to watch blu-ray movies on my ps3, do I have to have a 1080p hdtv, or can I have a 720p?

I just got a ps3 for christmas, and if I'm reading the manuel correctly, you have to have a 1080p hdtv in order to use the blu-ray player. Is that true, or will it work with a 720p hdtv?

Games will play just fine at 720p. Blu-Ray movies will also output in HD at 720p. The only problem you face is if you have an older HDTV that does not have an HDMI port, in which case there is a feature in the PS3 that improves DVD quality that is be disabled over component.

Don't be mislead by all the hype around 1080p, unless you have a very large screen > 57" given the average viewing distance of 12' from the screen you won't notice a difference on most LCD/Plasma displays.

It will work with a 720p hdtv and 1080p hdtv. It will just be a lower definition on a 720p hdtv compared to the 1080p hdtv.

It will not work on a standard defintion tv

this is a required characteristic of all Blu-Ray gamers and the reproduction secure practices on Blu-Ray. if you're observing a Blu-Ray action picture that is reproduction-secure (and that i'm no longer particular if any of them have had the reproduction-secure practices grew to develop into on yet; i comprehend initially all Blu-Ray were no longer reproduction-secure), as a way to view it in although decision you elect, it ought to be appropriate by HDMI to a gadget that is HDCP-compliant. otherwise, the participant will correct now output the action picture at a optimal of 480p (the same as prevalent DVD). (on your case, the television could then upscale it to 720p.) Non-reproduction-secure disks will output on your favored decision in spite of connection.
