Yellow onion started growing on its own - do I plant it in dirt?

I have a rotting yellow onion that sprouted green leaves on its own. Should I plant it? Let it sit in the sun? Will it produce anything worth the time?

    Yes it will produce. I have planted some too and now I have lots of onions.

    Plant it and you can grow another onion with no problem.

    No I would throw it out. You need very young onions for good crops.
