My computer is slow...?
Sometime around Sept. my computer (an 8 year old Dell desktop) started getting super slow and we got a screen saying that the CPU fan wasn't being detected. My dad dusted it himself as best he could and it ran lots better than it was before. Dec 1. my computer started running slow again, my dad started blaming everything under the sun and complaining about it (one of the things he said that was the cause for my computer to be running slow was that Yahoo Instant Messenger).
Just 2 maybe 3 weeks ago I saw a box with the words "virtual memory low" or something like that. Told my dad this and he still said that it was the Messenger. I removed the Messenger for a week and the computer was still slow. Reinstalled the Messenger (dad still says that the Messenger caused our computer to run slow even when it wasn't on my computer or running).
I've removed a lot of files (lots of unused games and deleted cookies and I'm thinking about doing a defrag).
My question: Is the memory being low the thing that is slowing my computer down? We added memory to my computer 2 years ago, 100 I think in memory we bought.
Oh and my computer is an XP

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

A defrag might be a good start but XP has a roll back feature that lets you roll to a preste date. That maybe something else you may want to look into. And in the future before you add anything you should set a roll back date to fall back on in case of any issues.
The defrag helps the computer organize things and then helps it start and run better.I believe the virtual memory should only be an issue if you are near the max storage space on the harddrive. There is also a systems check that looks for issues.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

Hi just try it out this tip it will helpful for you i think.
1. First delete the start up items in your computer.
2. go to Run type this command %temp% this is used to delete temp files.
3. Go to C: in your computer then windows--->prefetch delete all the items in this folder.
4. Then right click on C: go to properties--->tools. Run the error checking option and enable two option while pop-up window run. And do the disk defrag.
5.Then you told that system pop-ups that windows virtual memory is low. To increase your virtual memory follow these steps :
Right click the my computer icon(The icon should not be a shortcut) then go properties---Advance---Performance settings---Advanced-----Change.
Here the initial size to be set that is your ram capacity. For example your ram is 512mb means type the actual size in intial Size.
And the next maximum size is your double of the ram. For example if you are 512mb the maximum is 1024MB. Click the set and give ok for all. At last the system ask to restart, now you can restart your system, and work much faster.

Well in almost all communities, your internet is literally plugged into some box on or near your street. When everyone plugged into that box try to max out their internet connections you may experience some slower internet. As for your computer, it does have something to do with it. Your web browser has to load, and your computer runs it. Viruses can also slow down your computer and take up a lot of your internet connection, making it appear slow

it could be the memory because you have to much on your computer that's what was wrong with my mom's computer. So you could delete stuff on your computer are make it a data cd. And save it for on the cd. Are you could go to a local computer store and ask how much it costs to buy more memory. If it is not a memory problem check to see if it is a virus problem.

The CPU overheating can slow the computer. As you mention the fan not working one, I would start there, check that the fan is really cooling the CPU

Do you have enought disk space on C?
Also, i recommend this
go to control panel->system->advanced tab
in performance area, click on settings
then go2 advanced tab
in virtual memory area, click on change button
then in initial size put 2046
and max size put 4092
click on set
click on ok
click on apply
click on ok
and viola, you got a new computer
who this task does, is take 2046 to 4092 mb from your hard disk and use them like ram,
regards.

I have an XP and when my virtual memory gets low, it automatically fixes it for me. Have you checked your Windows Updates?
