Amnesia Inducing Drug?
This is probably an very odd question, but I'm hitting a wall looking for an answer. I figured this is as good a place as any to ask.
I'm writing a fictional story and am in search of a drug that causes amnesia or rather, makes it difficult to access memories.
A short over-simplified summary of the story is: I have this main character who is injured and wakes up with no memory of who he is. Anyway, this memory loss suits the "evil protagonist" fine. He wants it to continue. So anytime it seems the memories are returning, he gives the amnesiac some pills (or shots or whatever) to make them "slip away" again.
But what kinds of pills?
I've looked into things like Benzodiazepines (Ativan), and illegals like GHB and Rohypnal. But I'm not sure either has the desired effect.
I'm willing to make up the drug, as a "derivative of....". But derivative of what?
Anyone, have any ideas?
Thanks for the answer. For further explanation - The original amnesia is genuine, a result of being injured. But as he heals and his memory begins to return, he is then drugged to maintain the amnesia. I'm looking for a kind of drug or family of drugs which would maintain amnesia/memory loss.

I think a derivative of one of the ones you already mentioned would be ok. Another for this particular situation might be ketamine which is a disassociative anesthetic. This means the brain remains active but gets scrambled while under the influence. You could aver that the "scrambling" makes him lose the reforming memories and he has to start over.
Ketamine doesn't really have a significant amnestic effect other than when under the influence but it could suit your story. You don't have to be overly worried about getting every fact right because this type of amnesia is really limited to TV shows, movies, and books. You don't forget who you are as part of amnesia...the only real syndrome like it that can occur is a "psychogenic fugue". You may want to look that up also.
Edit: Looking at $$$'s post Topamax is sometimes unkindly referred to as "dope-amax". Probably not as strong an effect as you looking for though.
Edit #2: Dormicum (generic = midazolam, more common brand in US is Versed) and lorazepam (brand = Ativan and others) are both benzodiazepines. Versed is particularly known for its amnestic effect.

you said that the main character is injured, so wouldnt the amnesia be a result of physical trauma, or do you really mean that he is drugged? A derivative of those drugs you mentioned would be good. Or you can just make a totally new drug up with exactly the effects you wish it to have.
I dont know of any drug which would maintain amnesia for very long periods of time. Benzos will definitely make you forget many things, but as time goes on tolerance increases, making you more able to function more or less normally unless you keep on upping the dose to dangerous levels. Below is a link to a wiki page listing a bunch of fictional drugs, I dont know if youve seen it, but its worth a look.

Ketamine is an option.
Dormicum (lorazepam) is a drug used during some procedures, in induces sleep, and amnesia, but it's only short-term amnesia.
anyway, it think it migh work for your story

Detrol, Chantix and Topamax. I've actually taken Topamax (migraine med used off label for weight loss) and it make me totally stupid. I couldn't do simple math (I'm a CPA so this was scary). Chantix is for smoking cessation but people are having horrific side effects (especially if they mix with alcohol). I read about something with Detrol while looking around on an Alzheimer's info site.

Reading this I just have to share something because I spent many many years jumping from diet to diet without acheiving any real results until I discovered Pams magic plan (i found it on google). Without a doubt the most weight loss that I have ever achieved and I have not put it back on to this day.
