Why must there be a meaning to life?

I've never understood why people think that there is a meaning to life that keeps escaping our grasp. I'm not a believer in any deity, so maybe that's the cause for my lack of understanding this idea. I guess you have to believe in a creator of the universe to believe in this idea (since the creator might have this answer), but why should a lot of people bother trying to find this very elusive "meaning to life"?

Update:

Is it really that hard to accept the fact that there is no meaning set for all biological species living on this planet? And is it that hard to realize that there can't be a meaning to life that applies to every single species on this planet? Also, when will everyone realize that one can only find a meaning that applies only to themselves deriving from their life experiences so far, their goals and their passions?

Have you ever seen how a chicken behaves when you cut it's head off? Thats a description of poor lost souls wandering aimlessly in the sea of life and wondering what they're doing there. There is no other purpose in life than to please God, (Revelation 4:11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.")

and, because "In Him we live and breathe and have our being"

Meaning to life could be either a short-term or a long-term one.

In the short-term that, more or less, everyone has one fulfills his/her life goals whatever a person may have set out to accomplish. In the long-term, one looks for the meaning of one's existence in the context of eternity.

Time did not start with my birth nor will end with my death. Is there more to life than just my birth and death? This is where religion comes in and tries to answer the question as to what happened before we came into existence and what will happen after we die and how, if at all, we can be a part of eternity.

Some tend to accept what has been revealed in the Scriptures while others do not. It is up to the individuals to accept or reject.

People want a meaning they want something to comfort them a reason for bad things I personally do not believe there is a meaning to life it makes the most sense to me. But I believe with the ability for self-realization we can create our own meaning to life because the universe is quite an amazing place it would be a real shame to waste the little time you have with what we call existence not trying to understand the universe as it really is vs what you want it to.

I think a lot of people find this life very intolerable or confusing and the only thing that keeps them sane and happy is the thought that there are answers out there and a meaning they just don't understand - yet.

If their lives can mean something greater than just this little existence then it makes everything worthwhile. I call that wishful thinking but others find it comforting.

Do I understand your question to go about purpose as well?

If so, I believe that just like a political party has an obligation to try to get re-elected, every living thing, plant and animal strives to reproduce itself. This might be a lame purpose, but it is essentially what we are about. To sustain ourselves in the best health and general situation to advantage ourselves in the breeding stakes! Isnt that just dandy?

I think people have that need because they are trying to figure out what they need in this life.

Personally, I never thought about it, until I had my son. And then I understood with every fiber of my being, that he was the reason why I was here.

Wishful thinking. Most of the people on the planet can't deal with "I don't know" as an answer and flip out so they make stuff up to pretend they have complete answers.

Because people (like religious people) like to think that there is something more out there. That this simple life just isnt it. People like to think that besides this life there is another life, people like to think that some sort of deity like a god created us, and that we are special. People don't like to think that we are like every other animal in the world. They don't like to believe that once we die we are gone forever.

That's why i believe religious people are ignorant. But thats only my opinion (no offense to any religious person here).

1- the human mind enjoys wondering about elusive unanswered questions sometimes

2-some people want a reason to there existence and feel that their life is not wasted

3- they think that tgod has given them a task on earth.

I wonder out of curiousity, why do you ask this?

on a unrelated note, can anyone who's read "indiana jones and the white witch" answer my question at http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au...

It is not elusive. God gave us his word the Holy Bible to guide and teach us the meaning of life. Get one and read it.

If you speak modern English, then get a New Living translation, it is translated into modern English.

If you speak 16th Century old English you will need a King James Version.

Don't take anyone else's word for it, read it for yourself.

Or will you have contempt, prior to investigation?

I know eh! I completely agree! I personally dont believe any of us have a meaning to life, i think everyone decides on what they want to do with thir life as their alive, and give themself a meaning for themself. Its up to everyone to find a meaning of their life. I dont believe that when we were born God said "this child of mine is born and her/his meaning of life will be ____" i dont believe that. I also agree with you, there doesnt have to be a meaning to life. Everyone needs to calm down. We were all randomly chosen to be alive. Our parents decided to have s*x and here we are. That doesnt mean that child has a meaning. That child is only alive because their parents wanted them. I don't think any of us have a ''meaning'' and i honestly think people should stop being retar*s. LOL Like calm down, and live your meaningless life, before you die.
