Lactic acid produced by fermentation of glucose by the muscle cell lowers the pH inside the cell. Contraction of muscle filaments doesn't work as well at acid pH. The muscle fails to fully contract even though stimulated. This is probably an evolutionary adaptation to prevent you from irreversibly damaging the muscle cell by overuse.
