What is a New Year's pretzel?

At a bakery, I saw a sign that said "Order your New Year's pretzel today!" What the heck is a New Year's pretzel? Pork and sauerkraut I've heard of, but a pretzel? Is this an ethnic tradition or a local one? (The bakery is in Pittsburgh, PA.)

German New Year's Pretzel Coffee Cakes

Found this...(I've driven around Pittsburgh and the Mon (Monongahela River) but have never lived there....):

Growing up in Pittsburgh, we always used to buy a German New Year's pretzel each year - it's like a coffee cake in the shape of a pretzel with icing and almonds on top.

Might be a Catholic thing, but the Catholics I've polled have no clue about it.

A New Years pretzel can be someone who drank a lot and tried to do yoga. Don't take this answer seriously because I honestly just came up with this creative answer.

It is just a yeast dow formed into a huge brezel.

Very good for a hang over and it is tasty, too.

    Happy new year
