Practically unheard of....especially at the resorts. Occasionally there can be some avalanche danger in Smugglers' Notch...but in the actual notch, not at the resort which is a mile away. A few other mountains in the northeast part of the state have higher avalanche potential, but they don't have any ski resorts on those mountains.
This is not to say that the potential for a snowslide or rockslide does not exist at the resorts. However, the trails are checked by ski patrol quite often and there is little chance of anyone being killed by an avalanche at a VT resort,

Not particularly, but still, they are possible if it has snowed an amazing amount. Overall, I wouldn't worry about avalanches at all - I'd just worry about not skidding on all that ICE!!!

Avalanches are common at any type of hill or terrain in ski mountains. There are some ski hills where avalanches can even be high risk even on the ski runs themselves. Whenever there is big slabs of snow that you see that look unsteady, do NOT stay in these areas, as they are prone to avalanches. Listen to the weather report carefully. If it says that there is supposed to be warmer temperatures followed by cooler temperatures, then there is a melting and thawing period, followed by a freezing theme, this can make a layer of ice over the snow pack. If there is more snow that falls, then that layer of snow is said to be very unstable, and that is what causes avalanches.
