PS2 problem. Format Disc?

My son was playing a game yesterday and again this morning. Now it says we need either a PS1 or PS2 format disc. Is there something wrong with the game or the system itself?

Update:

I've tried 4 other games, just in case, but they seem to work fine.

    Mine does the same thing but luckily it happens on the games i don't wanna play.

    Buy a disc cleaner and if that doesn't work your ps2 is broken.

    I think the disc is broken look for the warranty and get the game again.

    I think your laser is dying or burning up.........

    my old one did the same thing.........

    them things never last long........
