What do vegans spread on their sandwiches in place of Mayo? How is potato salad made the vegan way.?

A friend of mine's child cannot eat egg, so we are wondering. A recipe called for mayo, cheese, milk, pasta, broccoli. What do we sub for the mayo? What do people use to substitute mayo or Miracle whip in general. Some of the substitutes still have a bit of egg in them.

Here is a recipe from a site one of my friends uses, actually isn't half bad. (I still can't get used to the taste of soy products though)

    1/2 cup of soy milk

    1/4 teaspoon mustard

    2 teaspoons of lemon juice

    Dash of salt

    1/4 teaspoon of paprika

    6 teaspoons of vegetable oil

    1. Combine the soy milk, mustard, lemon juice, salt, and paprika in a blender. Use a low setting and do not over mix. Slowly add the oil, one drop at a time. This will cause the mixture to thicken. Once all the ingredients have been added, mix until a smooth texture is achieved. As with regular mayonnaise, keep it refrigerated.

To the person saying they don't eat processed foods.

What breads do you make? I work at a bakery as a part-time job while attending school, and in few of the recipes can I recall ever having dairy products and eggs, and none of the breads use pork in the recipes.

I'm surprised you recommend soy milk, especially when you say you don't eat processed products. Soy milk is heavily processed, depending on what method of creating it you use, also most commercial brands add calcium carbonate (oh no... a chemical compound, run for your life!) in order to supply adequate amounts of calcium to be comparable to milk. This is because the bean pulp binds to lose calcium, making it unabsorbable.

Some pastas contain egg, this I won't argue with (helps hold the pasta together and provide protein), however if you search around they do have egg-free pastas on the market.

Veganaise is a VERY close egg-free alternative.

Or you could make that recipe that another person suggested.

And there is an exception to soy milk--rice, almond, oat, HEMP (great taste and MANY health benefits over soy incl protein and all essential amino acids).

There are also natural 'allergy' treatments designed to reconfigure the body's sensitization to certain foods/products.

Skeptics say what you want, but I can eat avocado again! :D

Natural allergy treatments include NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) & the Food Allergy Cure by Dr. Ellen Cutler.

Check them out and change your life.

I like nayonaise (sp?). Hummus is also good on sandwiches, but it has a completely different taste so it's not really a good substitute for Mayo.

My recommended substitutions: (though there are many)

Cheese - vegan gourmet cheese alternative

    Milk - vanilla rice milk

The pasta and broccoli are already vegan, and gluten-free pasta is available.

What a weird image. I'm probably going to dream about a monkey making me a sandwich and then dying. I'd probably be too upset to eat, and I'd start having a funeral for the monkey. Did the monkey wear clean gloves? I don't think I'd eat anything handled by a monkey; since they tend to throw poop.(Ashley might, but that's another story altogether.) I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but I couldn't resist chiming in.

If you must use prepared, store-bought mayo from a jar, a lot of people like to use Vegenaise - by Follow Your Heart. http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.html

Regarding one of the other posts, vegans do not use eggs. This mayo is eggless.

Health Food stores carry eggless mayo. You can also use Tahini which is used in hummus spreads. Hope this helps

  • Personally I don't like spreads on my sandwiches, but most veg@ns use veganaise to replace mayo. You can probably find it in a grocery store organic section or at an organic store. They most likely sell it at WalMart supercenter as well.

I hear it is very delicous so try it out!

I am pretty sure that Vegans can eat eggs, but that is not your question. The whipped cream cheese spread comes in many flavors and is soft enough to spread on bread. You can take an unflavored spread and add horseradish to give it a kick. A potato salad can be made by melting cream cheese and mixing it with plain yogurt. You can add mustard if you like.

I use Kelkin egg-less and dairy-less mayonnaise. Completely vegan. I have heard of Veganaise and Nayonaise, I can't get them but I hear they are both good.
