Mothers and Dads answers prefered?

I am moved greatly by a news story. Of all the things going on in this world how could any one be so stupid. My question. What would cause you to allow your children too walk in freezing temperatures alone 11 yr old girl-12 yr old boy wearing pajama bottoms boots and a winter coat 5 miles through heavy snow conditions. Temperature range 27*> -5*

Update:

I understand some of you may not have heard the story but it is true and happened. Hope I don't get deleted cause I sure don't get the stupidity of this one. After loosing a son feeling the way I do I hope this guy gets. well let some one else say it. Thank you in advance

Update 2:

Read today that the cousin was with him. and after they got the car unstuck they drove back home leaving the kids out alone. what kind of an animal is this guy. who gave him custody with 2 drug charges on him. The cousin should be charged as an accessory for not stepping in. I also have been in the cold but did dress my children like a polar bear incase something happened to me. Be prepaired at all times. I would not have let the children walk alone.Stay with the car until I get it unstuck then go call and tell her it is too rough to drive. Ps hope some one in jail gives this guy a hair cut with a dull knife.

Update 3:

Have to add something. Can you imagine how the brother is feeling. Letting his sister turn around and try to walk back to the truck. Them finding her. My thoughts are with him now that I got to vent a little TTYL God bless our children. May be he will grow up to be a lawyer or judge like the little girl wanted to be and take care of dad him self.

Honestly, I swear this is something my father would have made us do as kids. They put NO thought into the children. Just the fact of what needs to be done. And what he did was beyond stupid. And if the kids feared their father like I feared mine, then they do what he tells them to do.

It’s very sad. I really feel for the mother in this situation. And I pray the father learns some common sense in jail.

I wondered the thing when I read that story last night. I think it was very irresponsible and selfish of the father. A very sad situation all around and it's a tragedy that could have been completely avoided-

There are so many irresponsible parents out there. I wouldn't have gone out in the first place. We can point the finger, blame, and accuse and think well I would've, but what's done is done and it's very sad that a child had to suffer.

I would never do that to my kids... That's cruel... I live in WI, the temp here in Jan and Feb is -10 and below lets not mention the -30 temp in wind chill.

    that's atrocious... what's the story?? i didn't see it..

that's a sin... my sos 17months old and i dont let him no where near outside if it was that cold... actually his dad don't drive (we live in the city) and he wanted to take him to a holiday party in the next neighborhood.. it's a bit of a walk but doable.. so anyway.. i told him ain't no way in hell will he walk my son anywhere in the winter.. so i drove him and his whole god damn family... ughhh... :)))

I heard about that also. That man is selfish and a jerk. Once he got the truck un-stuck out of the snow he drove off and didn't even bother looking for his kids, WTF?? I think he should have gotten his butt out of there and did the walking and left his kids in the nice warm truck.
