What's the best method of birth control after having a baby?

My daughter is 4 months old. My OB/GYN told me to take the depo provera shots, but my insurance covered the generic for it, Medroxypr AC. She told me that because I'm breastfeeding, it's the only method of birthcontrol I can use. But i've been reading horrible things about this shot and was wondering what other moms who just gave birth are using and that are safe for breastfeeding....

Different options work better for different women.

While breast feeding your birth control options are

    Condoms

    Mini pill

    Depo shot

    Mirena

    diaphram

I have Mirena, and so far I have liked it, I have had it for about 10 months now and have had no problems with it. It is totally safe while breastfeeding.

I am stumped as to why your doctor would say your only option is the depo shot. I didn't want the depo shot because after coming off the depo shot, it can take a while to conceive. With Mirena, I should be able to begin ttc as soon as it is taken out.

Source(s): I just read the poster above, and although I don't disagree with her, I just wanted to state that different birth control options work differently with different people. Just because she had a bad experience with it, doesn't mean you will. Same goes with the depo shot, just because you have read horror stories about it, doesn't mean that will happen to you. Keep your mind open, and they only way you really can tell what works for you is to try it out yourself. Good luck.

I was advised to get a Mirena by my GP. It does not interfere with breastfeeding. I've had it for a month now (got it when baby was 4 months) and it's been good so far. After getting it inserted I had to lie down at the doctors for half an hour since I felt like throwing up and had cramps that felt like period pain. The nausea went away quickly and cramps went after a couple of hours. I have spotted sometimes during the past month but only need a panty liner. I got pregnant on the mini-pill last time so was reluctant to go back onto that. I would not have remembered to take it at the same time every day. Husband does not like condoms so that was out of the picture and other methods had more side effects so Mirena seemed like the best answer. It did cost NZ$400 though.

Whatever you do, don't get Mirena. I had Mirena and had to have it taken out. It sounds great at first, then you find out about all the side effects. I had violent mood swings (I have always been a pretty calm person), joint pain, major weight gain, migraines, severe cramping, irregular periods, sometimes heavy, sometimes non-existent. I would suggest the mini-pill. That's what I'm on now but we still use condoms just in case. My son is also a year old so the birth control effects of breastfeeding aren't as strong anymore.

As for the shot, I know of 2 people that have gotten pregnant while on it. One of them had 2 babies and 2 miscarriages, all while she was using the shot. Probably not a very good option but I wouldn't know that one from personal experience.

I was told this aswell, so I had to stick with using condoms unstill I stopped breastfeeding, I know this probably sounds like a pain in the backside but it is the safest. I kind of wish that I took the shots as it would have been alot easier. Don't go with what you read on the net, let a doctor advise you on the shot as people do exaggerate.

    Good Luck :)

I am going with the birth control shot taken every 3 mths because I can't keep up with a pill every day and im not to fond of the patches.

i am on the deop shot and i like it. no periods. but some people do get them and some people don't get periods. i never breastfeed but i did not like the pills been on them before and i always some how missed a pill or 2. and never herd good things about the patch. so i went with the deop every 3 months gets a shot. the only thing i have heard about the deop is it takes for ever to get pregnant again after you get off the shot.

I have a six month old and I am on the Mini Pill. These are safe to take while breastfeeding since they are progesterone-only birth control pills. They are slightly less effective than regular birth control pills so it is very important that you take them on time everyday. So far they have been a very good option for me.

i use depo, started it a month after i gave birth. whilst i was breast feeding, i had some headaches when i first started it but they dont happen anymore. its good, easy, and you only need it once every 12 weeks. its stopped my periods but i see that as a positive. havnt really had any other side effects, i know a few ppl on it and they all think its great. definatly what i would sugest. the side effects are quite small and dont effect evry one its also one of the safest versions. im pretty sure thre is a type of pill you can take. but i dnt trust thm, i got pregnant whilst on the pill!

The only birth control that is safe for breastfeeding is the mini pill. That is the only one that doesn't mess potentially with your milk supply.
