    Metronome

    1 Union Square S.

This tacky, steam-spouting digital-clock installation, the result of a competition judged by the Public Art Fund, has been confusing people since it was built in 1999. The six numbers on the left display how much time has passed since midnight; the six numbers on the right, read backwards, display how long till midnight. Its supposed to remind us that time is unknowable, and it certainly succeeds.

very very easy. you can take the 2/3 if you want, or almost any train that goes to 14th Street, the only thing is that you have to walk, either sooner, or later (or, transfer to a 2nd train). this is my own 1-train, no transfer, answer to your question: walk from the 7th Avenue side of Penn Station one avenue block east to 6th Avenue / Herald Square, and take the Broadway Line N/R/Q/W trains from 34th Street / Herald Square to 14th Street / Union Square. the local R and W trains take 3 stops, while the express N and Q trains take only 1 stop. (and just get on the first downtown train that comes, regardless of express or local. you can't predict when any train will come, so it isn't worth waiting.) if you do the one block walk first and then take the subway, you'll stop right at Union Square without needing to transfer. it really isn't worth going any other way without spending more time than you really need to...
