Well being bi-lingual, I can simply say that the difference is song. The original Macross series embodied a real music studio JVC Victor to create songs for the series. Hence Lynn Minmay played by singer/actor Mari Iijima became a huge music success alongside the cartoon. In Robotech the American series? They never bothered to produce music. It was simply karaoke songs written by people at Harmony Gold in the back room.
