What sort of dog should I look for?

I mostly want one to run around with. So I want a dog who has a lot of energy but is calm enough to run at my pace and not drag me all over the place.

then most definately a big dog. if u want a dog that really likes to run then i would suggest a grey hound but if u wanta hyper one but still likes to run then i would say a border collie but my favorite would be an old english sheep dog. they're really mellow animals but love to have fun and be energetic and they're really great around kids

Every dog is different, so no one breed will be better than another.

A good suggestion is to volunteer as a dog walker (runner!) at your local shelter. You'll be able to work with several different dogs and see how they behave with you on-leash - how their energy is, how much they like to run with you, etc. Not only will you be doing something to help out the dogs, but you'll be able to get a good preview of your future running partner and pick out what's best for you.

A Shih-Tzu! not the miniature ones though! the miniature ones are stupid and you have to carry them! I hav a Shih-Tzu and she is full of energy! they are reaally nice to.Shih-tzus are really easy to train. But dont grow their hair long if you want them active, keep it moderately short, so they can run around and stuff! But they can also b loyal . like wen i take my dog to the park with mty family, she always waits 4 the last person 2 catch up b4 she keeps going!

DO NOT consider "Proud owner of 6 dogs" or "Brittany's" suggestion of a Border Collie. I have a BC and, unless you have a herd of sheep or agility course in your backyard, DO NOT GET A BC. My BC is a professional agility dog and I have to run him several times a day over my course and he is still not tired. Going for a little jog will not do for a BC.

I would advise a Sheltie. They are lovable, ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE, and they only need moderate exercise, like a long jog. My Aubie Mack is an awesome agility partner but is also content which being a cuddle bug.

    You should go here: http://www.justdogbreeds.com/

You question involves more than just can they keep up with me and not drag me around.

All dogs need appropriate exercise, do you want a large or small dog. The Shepherd breeds are great runners, as well as the gray-hound, doberman, lab, and some other large breeds. However large breeds need a lot of training to teach them who is alpha. My in-laws have a Shepherd that is awesome. If you want he will walk right beside you or he will walk 4 or 5 steps in-front. He always puts himself between you and someone else for protection.

With small dogs you need to consider that they generally have an abundant amount of energy. If you only walk or run a few miles a day then remember that a smaller dog (the jack Russell terrier or terror) is often mistake for mild, they are generally very hyper and need 4 to 5 times more exercise than a larger dog.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

Also try going to your local animal shelter and asking them if you can walk the dogs, then pick from your evaluation of them from that.
