    3 (Fe3O4) + 8 (Al) --> 4 (Al2O3) + 9 (Fe)

    P.S. you don't need the parentheses, i just put them there to separate them

    3FeO4 + 4Al --> 4Al2O3 + 3Fe

    Always try to balance the more complex compounds first so you don't get thrown off later.

    3Fe3O4 + 8Al --> 4Al2O3 + 9Fe

    The thermite reaction !!!

    Try multiplying the oxygen containing compounds by numbers that will equalize the number of O on both sides first.

    That should do the trick!

    Edit: Way to take all the learning out of chemistry, fellow post-ers. If I had this technology when I was in high school, I'd have no self-motivation - I'd just ask some other people to do it for me! What a great way to learn!
