Can you have a total solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse in the same month?

And can you tell me why or why not? My husband, son and I are debating this.

Certainly. In fact, often a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse occur within 15 days of each other, because the orbits of the Earth and Moon are aligned. For example, this year:

    Jan 26 Annular solar eclipse

    Feb 9 Penumbral lunar eclipse

    Jul 7 Penumbral lunar eclipse

    Jul 22 Total solar eclipse

    Aug 6 Penumbral lunar eclipse

  • yes but not in the same location as one another, you can have a lunar eclipse in part of the world and a few days latter you may have a solar eclipse some where else.
