My 3 year old cat suddenly started howling late at night while we sleep.. what is the deal?
I have two cats.. One 6 year old, well behaved, people loving cat. I could sleep all day with her and never be bothered. The other cat, who is less than 3 years old is another story. She generally leaves us alone at night but the past 4 or so nights she has howling spells. She'll start howling right after we go to bed, then a few more times each night. My fiance got up last night and she had brought a toy up with her and was laying next to it while howling... we try to play during the day but she has no interest. Why all of a sudden have these howling fits started? I've been told to ignore her.. it's an attention seeking thing. I feel bad like we don't play with her enough, but she won't play during the day. UGH... we're so tired, should we just lock her out for awhile?
SHE IS FIXED.

Honestly from experience, I know how incredibly painful this is. I lost my 16 year old kitty two years ago and I just recently got over it. It takes a LONG time to get used to them not being around. Another cat DOES help, or it helped me anyway, but it is by no means a replacement. The best advice I can give you is let yourself grieve. Don't be worried about looking stupid or anything, just cry it out. Remember the great times you had with her. Find some pictures and makes a collage. As for your parents burying her without you, I don't know why they would do that. The only way I can think that you could deal with that is either forgive and forget, or confront them and ask them WHY they would do that. Maybe then you can get some closure. I wish you well and I'm so sorry for your loss.

My cats do that when they are lonely or bored. It became a big issue awhile back when they literally would not let me sleep. So, when they start being loud I make a "pssssst" sound a few times, and on some occasions I eventually put the offender in their travel box and let them spend the night in the garage alone! It worked really well. Now they calm down when I say "pssst". Also you could poke a tiny hole in the top of a plastic soda bottle, fill it with water and squirt her. Most cats will try to dig beneath a closed door and shred your carpet.

She might be in heat. Has she been fixed?
Otherwise she might just be in need of attention. She might feel like you are neglecting her for the other cat.
