buying a manual car without knowing how to drive stick?

I want to buy a manual vw rabbit, but i am very much a beginner when it comes to stick shift. Is it safe to buy the car and learn on it, or will I damage the car and cost my self more money? how can i approach this in the most cost effective way?

Update:

note i want to buy a NEW rabbit, so still worried about the whole destroying the clutch.

Buy the car and receive training from someone who knows how to drive stick in a parking lot. Learning how to drive stickshift is an excellent skill and it only takes about a week to learn. Plus girls like a guy that can drive stick. Girls that can drive stick make guys go ape-s h i t trust me!

ask someone to teach you before you but just because you don't want to ruin the clutch it's about 500$$ plus labor give or take. It is easy to learn. It can be tough on hills at first so def learn first.

You do understand that no one drives a stick properly. The way people really drive them causes them to use as much gas as an automatic. And people go through enough clutches to cover the added cost of an automatic.

By 1985, automatic transmissions were better than manual transmissions in pretty well every way. Except for fun when driving down a windy mountain road.

My first car was a honda accord and it was a manual. I would say learn everything there is to know from the internet on driving a stick. Then if you think you will still like it then go buy it and just practice. It is really bad to learn to drive because you will eat up your clutch which is 300$ to replace.

well thats what i did, my first vehicle was an old chevy truck stick shift and i still bought it and just had someone teach me for a little bit one day and i kept driving practicing on my own and by the 3rd day i was driving it without jerking it or stalling, just gotta practice it, and be best to practice at first ina parking lot or field until you get comfortable enough to be on the roads

Go for it. I had never drove one til I got my first car. And I learnt on it. Its a little hard to learn on, I had problems like letting out on the clutch to fast, but its comes to you really fast, you catch on quickly and its something you will never forget.
