I'm looking for non-fiction books?

I want things like Black Like Me, Into the Wild (that may be a stretch) or Last Lecture. I don't want historic things; wars and politics bore me! If there was a book that someone wrote about their Titanic excursion then that would work too. I want to read true stories that are set more like a novel. Easier to read... Any suggestions?

My top recommendation would be "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt. Other good ones are "Cicero" by Anthony Everitt, "Over the Edge of the World" by Laurence Bergreen, and the very funny "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" by J. Maarten Troost (which is not about the sex lives of cannibals). Also, Primo Levi's "Survival in Auschwitz".

Stolen Lives by Malika Oukfir: True story about about an entire family (kids, grandma, etc.) who are held as political prisoners for 20 years. I guarantee you will never forget this book. Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer: True story of a group of climbers trying to reach the peak of Mt. Everest. Some make it some don't... the story is written by one of the survivors. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey: This is one of those rare self help books that has actually helped! The principals are simple and in the first chapter, the author actually says "this is nothing you don't already know." The idea being that treating people a certain way (with respect & kindness) is in fact a natural part of our pshyche - we just need to be reminded sometimes. I can honestly say this book has changed the way I view myself and the world... permanently and for the better.

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is terrifying. It's written much like a novel and it's about an Ebola outbreak in northern Virginia in the late 80's. Scariest book I ever read, very gripping. I had nightmares about monkeys coming at me with bloody needles (I am afraid of needles only while reading this book, never any other time).

"Into Thin Air" by John Krakauer is about a disastrous 1996 Everest climbing season. Also excellent.

I suggest you check out the New York Times Bestseller list. They have a whole section on non-fiction books.
