Cleaning dirt bike air filter?
how would you clean a dirt bike air filter without buying a special chemical ? Possibly something that i might already have. A book that i have said i couldn't clean it With gasoline because it might ruin the seams.
my power washer seems like it would tear the filter apart

DO NOT use a pressure washer or an air gun, that's just ridiculous. Gas is okay, but kerosene is better. Also detergent alone will do nothing. You must clean with gas or kerosene first and then follow with a dish washing detergent. Remember, if you don't have filter oil to put on it after cleaning you are better off leaving it dirty. I only mention this because it sounds like you don't really have the things you need to do this properly.

The air filter stops dirt and stuff getting into the engine and causing damage. If it is dirty and not cleaned regularly it doesn't do its job properly and the bike won't run as it should as the air flow through it is compromised. If it is not cleaned regularly you can damage the piston and barrel. It is also important to oil the filter as that stops the smaller dust getting through.

Any detergent for cleaning greasy pots and pans.
You only need something that will break down the oil on the filter.

use petrol (gas) hang it on the 'bars - go do something else for 10 minutes ( I usually lube the chain ) when it's dry squirt some two sroke oil on it till it's saturated, squeeze it out well & re-install.
Source(s): been doing foam filters like this since my dad showed me when I was 10yrs old - I'm 41in March & I never have problems. - 1 decade ago
If you have an air compressor available, use it. Spray the air from the back side of the filter to remove the dirt. Do not put the nozzle directly on the filter for damage may occur. If there is build up still, remove it with a dry cloth. If it's a paper type filter, do not get it wet or or may not work properly.

for paper vacum cleaner and air compressor blow gun water and gas damages the element as does carb cleaner and makes it less able to pass
air causing a rich mixture light tapping and vacum cleaner really works great
for foam gas away let it dry put it on.
