No. 1
Phantom of the Paradise
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071994/
It is said that this movie, especially Gerrit Graham's performance as Beef, inspired the creation of Dr. Frank N. Furter and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", first as a musical play then as one of the ultimate cult films.
No. 2
"The Buddy Holly Story" definitely ranks way up there. Gary Busey deserved that Oscar!
No. 3
Wild in the Streets
Fictional band Max Frost & The Troopers, led by Christopher Jones, actually had a couple of songs hit the charts! Target stores recently used "Things to Come" in an ad campaign!
No. 4 & 5
Then, there are these two about the same band:
That'll Be the Day~fictional band comprised of David Essex, Adam Faith, Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, plus others
Stardust~David Essex, Dave Edmunds, Adam Faith taking over Ringo's role, plus others
What's the band's name? The Stray Cats! Surely this is Brian Setzer's inspiration though there seems to be a great deal of debate about this.
Here are some others that deserve to be mentioned:
Ferry Cross the Mercy~includes Gerry & the Pacemakers
Harmony Cats~fictional
Head~The Monkees
Hedwig and the Angry Inch~fictional
Light of Day (1987)~fictional band The Barbusters, comprised of Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox
Rock Around the Clock~Bill Haley & the Comets
The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash~Eric Idle's Beatles parody
Sweetwater: A True Rock Story~This is the group that opened Woodstock! The film is a mix of fact and fiction.
Times Square (1980)~fictional
Honorable mention:
I Wanna Hold Your Hand~Beatlemania!
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls~ficitional~AWFUL! Approach with caution.

well, my favourite band is Smashing Pumpkins, but naming 5 would involve me putting down Batman + Robin, so I won't do that. I'll do Nine Inch Nails instead. I'm excited that Trent Reznor is working with David Fincher in the upcoming Girl With The Dragon tattoo, I was so happy when he won an Oscar for The Social Network. 1. Natural Born Killers - 'Something I Can Never Have' 2. Seven- 'Closer' (remix). Played during one of the best opening credit scenes of all time 3. Lost Highway- 'The Perfect Drug' 4. Man On Fire- 'The Great Below' 5. Wanted (it's a meh movie though) - 'The Day The Whole World Went Away' BA: I live in Australia, so no. BA2: Moneyball looks interesting. I can't believe there is going to be another Johnny English movie. Really? BA3: I had to look him up, lol. He was in State Of Play and Speed, which are solid movies. I still need to watch The Hours, though.
