What would happen if one injected coca-cola into their bloodstream?

The pH of coke is fairly acidic, pH of around 3.0 or so. Humans must maintain their blood pH around 7.40, if it varies by much more than 0.1 from that number you generally have neurological effects, coma, and death. Injecting acid into a vein would cause this to happen very quickly.

So you would be dead from the acidemia quickly. Other problems would include red cell lysis (due to osmotic imbalance & direct acid effects), possible coagulation (more likely if it was the syrupy coke from fountains, possibly resulting in pulmonary embolism and death), electrolyte imbalance (leading to heart arrhythmias, heart attack/cardiac arrest, coma, death), and possible chronic kidney failure (ok this one is a stretch, you would have to survive all the previous problems and assume that sticky acidic coke couldn't be too good for kidney filtration).

But the main thing would be acid imbalance (acidemia, read about "metabolic acidosis" for more descriptions).

Treatment? Don't know because my med school never gave a lecture on "critical care management of acute intravenous soda pop overdose." I'll have to suggest that to the Curriculum Committee. But I would guess the treatment would be supportive, sodium bicarb IV to correct the pH imbalance, and normal saline to dilute the contaminated blood (old MD adage "the solution to pollution is dilution!")

PS don't try that at home, ok

Your immune system would respond to the DNA as it would to any invader - latching on and breaking it down. Even if it didn't, though, your cells wouldn't absorb it. Animal cells don't like to take in foreign DNA, and it's hard to get them to integrate that DNA into their own. It's partially because all cells must be coordinated with each other, and partially as a defense against viruses.

Well, it wouldn't give you as much of a rush as injecting the old coca-cola that actually had cocaine in it. Good luck!

    Never thought about it.

I guess with the air you will inject you will probably die.

What made you think about it?
