I have a Welsh Terrier who started pissing inside again, why and what now?

He doesn't HAVE to go to the bathroom, he'll be two years old in March, and he's been neutered since he was seven months old. He "asks" me to go outside when he has to go and goes out routinely four to five times A DAY! What is his problem now? Why is he doing this... it really pisses me off [no pun intended].

Update:

There has been absolutely no change in his routine but I do think he gets ticked off at me when I leave the house, and the back door is right where he's doing it, so maybe he's marking the spot so no one else will take over. I'll check out the UTI business, he shouldn't have one but I can't rule it out completely.

My exsperience with this problem, I found out that the dog is upset with you and this is their way of acting out, or they could have a UTI or bladder infection. I had a cat at one time and If her littler box was not changed as often as SHE wanted it, or If I fussed at her, next thing I knew she would piss in the floor sometimes looking right at me,knowing she was doing it. That was just my exsperience

He's pissed at you for leaving. (Pun is a happy accident!)

My friend and my cousin both had the exact same problem. Different breeds, exactly the same problem. One of them was sick and mostly in bed for nearly a year, and when she got better and went back to work, her dog started doing that about a month later. The other is a vet technician, and when she got pregnant, the vet had her work from home because there are things you are exposed to in a vet's office which you should stay away from when pregnant. She spent her pregnancy working from home, and then was on maternity leave, and when she went back to work, boom, the dog started peeing right where she comes in the door.

I know you've been sick, so I imagine you've been home a lot in the last year or so. He's probably mad at you because you were there for so long, and now you're going out again. The one who is the vet tech knew immediately what was going on when it started happening. Unfortunately, it's not easy to fix. She had to get a spray that tells her dog not to pee there, and she had to replace the little carpet he was peeing on, because that just screams, "Pee here!" to a dog. Then she had to do a bit of re-training on the potty front. She ended up doing what she did when she first got him as a puppy, which was crate training. It took her about six weeks to retrain him, and the problem went away, but there were accidents (or acts of defiance, if you prefer) during that time.

You may want to look at doing some retraining with him. You might also consider spending a little extra time with him before you leave, and then especially when you come home, so he understands that you aren't leaving him forever. Eventually, he should come around.

Until then, keep the cleaners handy...

If this behaviour is new the first thing to do is think about any changes you have made to your dogs routine. Is he left alone more often? Are you bringing new people into the house or even another pet? Are you going through a painful break up or yelling in the house more often? Changes in your behaviour can cause a dog to be upset and express it in the only way they know how.

Changes in a dogs routine can be very upsetting and since they cannot talk to you about it they show you in behaviours like peeing on the rug.

The second thing you need to check out is whether this is a medical issue. Some conditions cause this to happen. Take him to your vet and see what they can do.

Has something changed in the home? Dogs are sensitive to things. Use Nature's Miracle on the spots. If he is making a habit of this, you may need to redo the crate training. The other thing is you may need to take a urine sample to the vet to check for a bladder infection.

You will never tame a Welsh terrier, they are little rascals, perhaps he thinks he,s a rugby player and instead of being an outside half he,s decided to be an inside centre

Have you ruled out medical reasons he may be doing this? If not, take him to the vet, he could have a UTI or other medial problem.

  • Maybe he has a UTI. Have the vet check him over.

Its hard to say why since no of us live with you. What you do is go back to basics with potty training.
