Which is more credible E-mail or Science Journal?

A new Journal Nature article on warming in Antarctica has gotten a lot of attention. Some of the doubter blogsphere are spreading around an e-mail from a Mr. Ross Hayes (he works for NASA in some capacity) as "evidence" that the Nature article isn't credible.

My question is, why would anyone consider an e-mail more credible than a peer reviewed journal article by a highly regarded climate scientist in a prestigious scientific journal?

There is no indication Mr. Hayes has any advanced science training, no record of any scientific publications, the e-mail is easily debunked, and though he worked for the CNN weather department (generally listed as a "weather producer") for 19 years he's not even an AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.

The journal Nature was establish in 1869 and is considered one of the preeminent science journals in the world. Competition is very high to get published in Nature, and thus only papers of the highest caliber by scientists of the highest caliber make it in their pages.

It wouldn't matter who the e-mail were written by, it's value is meaningless in comparison with a journal article.
